Greetings to all our exceptional Panorunners!
It’s been a while since our last Newsletter in February, and much has happened since then.
Firstly, you may have noticed that there has been a switch of roles on the Committee from what was voted on at the AGM in February. Aggie and Nicola have switched portfolios, and Aggie is now the Club Secretary and Nicola has taken over as Club Treasurer. This was brought up at the Committee meeting in March and approved by the Committee.
Secondly, with summer now just a distant memory, much of our training now takes place before sunrise or after sunset, making your safety on the road a primary concern. When out running in dark conditions please ensure that you always make yourself VISIBLE to other road users. Wear bright colours, reflective belts and/or bibs, headlamps, etc. When running by yourself, or in groups, please ensure that you ALWAYS run facing oncoming traffic. Don’t assume that other road users can see you. Pay attention to your surroundings. Do not run with headphones! Not only will you not be able to be aware of your surroundings, you also make yourself a potential victim of a criminal act.
Thirdly, with a third of the year already gone, I can publish the LEADERBOARD of the Club Challenge (see below in this edition). In future Newsletters we will also show the race results on a monthly basis so you can see how other Club members are doing as well as keep a track of your times.
To all our exceptional Panorunners, stay healthy, stay warm, stay safe!
Key dates to remember:
25th May 2019: The traditional Pre-Comrades Pasta party (all members are welcome!) See below!!
1st June 2019: Pre-Comrades breakfast run at Caltex Garage (Doreen Road)

17th August 2019: Clearwater 5km Fun Run and 10KM Road Race! We will be needing all Club members to help.
Our Club members have been out on the roads training hard in preparation for 2 of the most iconic road races in South Africa, namely the Two Oceans marathon and upcoming Comrades Marathon.
Two Oceans 2019
The Committee would like to congratulate our exceptional Panorunners on their fine performances at the Two Oceans marathon in April. We had 11 members who participated in both the half marathon and ultramarathon. Our ultramarathoners were thrown a nasty curveball a few hours before their race with a route change up Ou Kaapse Weg, which included a 7km uphill climb, and much harder than the Chapman’s Drive route! Well done on successfully completing that grueling run.
A special mention must go to one of our new members, Retha Grobler, who clocked the fastest half marathon time in the Club this year of 1h38:42! Well done Retha!!
There are less than 3 weeks to go to the start of 94th running of the Comrades Marathon on the 9th June 2019.
Here is the list of the brave Panorunners who have answered the extraordinary and life changing challenge that is the Comrades Marathon. I think this is the first time in a while that we have had so many runners that have qualified for the C seeding group! Some very serious athletes have done some very serious training and put in some impressive times!
Setumo, Austin, Xana, Andre, Joelene and Mark will all be going for their Back-to-Back Medals, while our very own Iron-Man, Hannes, will be running for that very prestigious GREEN NUMBER! Good luck to all of you!
Please help us in wishing our Comrades runners a successful run and join us at the traditional Panorama Pre-Comrades Pasta Party on the 25th May 2019. ALL MEMBERS ARE WELCOME!!
Goody bags will be handed out to our Comrades runners. There will be lots of cool lucky draws and prizes for the whole family! You will also have a chance to predict the finishing times of our Comrades runners at R5 a time. You can predict as many times as you want. The winner with the closest to the finishing time will win the jackpot!!
Please come and join us and have a good time with your Panorama family!
There are still tables available (we have booked out the whole restaurant) and there is still time for you to RSVP to Marna. Please come and join us!!! Please note there will be a cash bar.

The purpose of the Challenge is to encourage member participation and competition in races.
The Club Challenge works as follows:
Men and Women compete separately in age categories of Senior (20-39), Veteran (40-49), Master (50-59), and Grand Master (60+). So instead of competing against the whole Club, you will compete against other members of the same gender and age category.
- If you compete in a race, you will be awarded points as follows:
- 1st in your category = 100 points
- 2nd in your category = 95 points (i.e. 5% less than 100)
- 3rd in your category = 90.25 points (i.e. 5% less than 95)
- 4th in your category = 85.74 points (i.e. 5% less than 90.25) etc.
- You must run in your PANORAMA COLOURS and enter as a PANORAMA RUNNER; otherwise we will be unable to track your participation in the events.
- Points will be awarded in 2 separate distance categories:
- 10km, 15km, 21.1km races
- 2km, 42.2km and ultra-marathon races (excluding the Comrades marathon)
- The Club Challenge standings will be published in the Monthly Newsletter.

Running Tip of the Month
Don’t aim for a PB every time you run
To eventually run faster, but you need to run slower too – regularly. Easy runs are a surprisingly effective way to build your fitness. And although it is tempting to drop the slower/easier runs from your training schedule, they are very important for healing and for being able to run more often, as well as for balancing out the faster and more intense sessions.
